Hula Hoops and Happiness in Picton, Ontario.

After crisscrossing Canada and residing in its biggest city for over a decade, I’ve recently found contentment in the small town of Picton, in scenic Prince Edward County. We moved here to improve our standard of living and put a stake in the ground. We vowed to build a place of our own, and to raise a family in a healthy rural environment. Technology has made it possible, more specifically Elon Musk’s Starlink allows us to stay in touch with friends and business contacts in real time. In some ways, it’s like we’re still living in the city, minus the traffic, loud noises, danger and smog. Instead we enjoy infinite fresh air, white sand, wild animals and lots of peaceful solitude.

Picton is the perfect choice for many reasons. It’s affordable, and yet not a total backwater. Our summers in Prince Edward County are filled with (British) history, lonely beaches and breathtaking views. Dwelling in such a culturally rich and scenic area is very motivational and I’m encouraged to be more engaged with my creative self. The beauty which surrounds us make my artistic process more enjoyable and fulfilling. The visuals, cuisine, and even the way people talk out here reduces my stress and promotes relaxation and inner reflection. This mental and emotional clarity opens up new space for creative thinking and experimentation.

Picton is filled with other creative people whom I hope will find me, in their own way, and accept me into their community. I’d like to entertain them and play some role at local events. Putting down roots once seemed unimaginable, but now it’s a welcome state-of-being and I’m ready to make friends and find new opportunities. I hope to secure a scenic place where I can teach fitness activities, conducting online and in-person workshops for kids, and enthusiasts of all ages, right here in The County.

Impromptu Hula Hoop Show at Vic Social

On Saturday the 20th of April 2024, we ventured out to sample the nightlife and explore our small town environs. We arranged to meet friends who’d travelled some distance to spend time with us. We enjoyed the coconut shrimp and roast Brussel sprouts at Vic Social, Picton’s newest and hippest hotspot, and our favourite meeting place. It’s a dynamic eatery and versatile enough to accommodate my hula hooping. It’s especially good in the summer when the patios are packed and the bartenders serve upscale cocktails like what you see waiting for me on the table below. The video I’ve embedded above is an impromptu performance so my friends and the person making the recording could see my latest act. It’s fun to watch the restaurant patrons in the background react to the show, many of whom ventured outside to watch.

Reinventing myself in Prince Edward County, I’m hoping to bring my LED hula-hooping spectacle to annual fall fairs, winter festivals, weddings, bar mitzvahs and whatever else is happening. My sunset show will spice up any gathering, especially if there are kids in the audience.

Circus Camp Activity Director at the Baxter Arts Centre in Bloomfield P.E.C

Hula hooping is especially good for kids and children as young as five. The exercise challenges still-developing brains, requiring young people to isolate major tasks and coordinate their body parts doing different motions. They have to learn to separate their trunk movements from their limbs, maintain a stable balance, and incorporate flexibility in their motions, all at the same time. This spring and summer I’m teaching workshops filled with such positive experiences at the Baxter Arts Center in Bloomfield.

Circus Camp includes hula-hooping of course, but also juggling, stilt-walking, acrobatics and clowning. Our equipment is especially designed with safety in mind. Circus specialists like myself and Pyrobelle from the Peterborough Academy of Circus Arts are present to govern the activities and leverage skills development, teaching life-shaping lessons and a passion for circus arts. Baxter Arts Centre is a not-for-profit registered Charity which provides a creative community space for many other arts related programs in Bloomfield and it’s exactly what I’d hoped to find before we moved. This facility also operates as a small community centre and is available for parties, lectures and other events.

Hooping in Prince Edward County

Would you like to learn hooping? Do you want me to teach you how to dance with a hoop? Hooping combines technical moves and tricks with freestyle or technical dancing and is frequently performed to dance music. In contrast to the classic toy hula hoop we all played with as kids, professionals use heavier, larger diameter rings which we circle about our hips, chest, neck, shoulders, thighs, knees, arms, hands, thumbs, feet, and toes. My own hooping has been influenced by other disciplines such as rhythmic gymnastics, hip-hop and freestyle dancing, my own fire dancing performances, poi, and other exercises. Please reach out and contact me if you’d like some fun fitness training, or if you’re organizing kids’ camp activities, or planning an unforgettable event.
